  • The numbers must be placed on both sides of the forward half of the boat (the bow).
  • They must be positioned above the waterline and be clearly visible.
  • The registration numbers must be read from left to right on each side of the boat.
  • The validation decal issued with the registration must be placed within six inches of the registration number.

Size and Style Requirements

To ensure readability and compliance, Indiana has specific rules regarding the size and style of boat registration numbers:

  • The letters and numbers must be at least three inches high.
  • They should be in a block-style font.
  • The color of the numbers must contrast with the boat’s hull color for maximum visibility.
  • Spaces or hyphens should be placed between the letters and numbers (e.g., IN 1234 AB or IN-1234-AB).

Additional Important Information

  • Registration must be renewed periodically, and you should always carry proof of registration while operating your boat.
  • If you transfer ownership of a boat, the registration does not automatically transfer to the new owner. The new owner must apply for a new registration.
  • If your boat registration number becomes damaged or illegible, you must replace it immediately to remain compliant.
